Memorial Dedication at Witton Cemetery

Sunday 29 November 2015

I attended a Service of Dedication in Memory of three defenders of Rorke's Drift at Witton Cemetery in Birmingham.

The dedication was in memory of:
Sgt. Joseph Windridge
Pte Robert Cole
Pte Samuel Parry

I attended as a member of The 1879 Group who, together with representatives from The Diehards, represented the memory of the soldiers of the 24th Regiment who defended Rorke's Drift in 1879.

There was a short welcome from the Royal British Legion County Chair, Councillor Anita Ward.

This was followed by a short account of the Defence of Rorke's Drift given by Mr Bill Cainan - former curator of the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh, Brecon.

Mr Graham Mason, an Anglo-Zulu War researcher then gave an account of Sergeant Josepf Windridge.

A service of dedication was then led by Father Oliver Coss of the Royal Britis Legion.

The event was organised by
Drum Major Tim Needham RM.
